Effects of Acid Mine Drainage on Diversity of Macroinvertebrates at Morris Creek Watershed

Coal mining has played an important role in the history of West Virginia’s economy, but it is also cause a major environmental issue called acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD caused by heavy metals from abandoned mines running into waterways and soils. concern because many areas affected flow larger water sources that are used for drinking recreation. This problem individuals unknowingly consuming greater amounts this can kidney dysfunction, nervous system disorders, vascular damage humans. The purpose our study was to determine if diversity abundance aquatic insects Morris Creek Watershed. Two locations were sampled, site limestone-treated site. Water samples macroinvertebrates collected at these locations. Species identified both areas, we DNA barcoding, further identify macroinvertebrates. Ultimately, species area treated with limestone.
